Get to know El Chalten

We invite you to live a unique experience at Southern Patagonia, Argentina, admiring stunning landscapes, ancient glaciers, huge lakes and snowcapped peaks; explore different mountain trails of varying difficulty; through ancient native forests .
Placed Southwest at the province of Santa Cruz, 90 kilometers West from the legendary Route 40, after touring the entire extention of Lake Viedma ,by an asphalt road, you will arrive to El Chalten. Crossing the Patagonian Steppe in its fullness until you reach the Andes, arriving at the destination its a delight for sight and soul.
Located in a privileged area of the northern edge of Los Glaciares National Park. Over the years it became a tourist mountain village, with large numbers of visitors from all around the world interested in taking a close look to the majestic Mount Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre and numerous granite spiers surrounding both.
Our town was founded on October 12, 1985 for geopolitical reasons, in order to strengthen sovereignty in the area, which has been inhabited since the dawn of the twentieth century.
El Chalten was declared the Trekking National Capital on July 28, 1994, thanks to the variety of trails suitable for developing this activity due to the geographical particularities of this area. There are different degrees of trail difficulty, from low to high physical and technical demand. Among the most frequented, we can mention those leading to: Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Capri and Laguna Torre, which are well marked and have been adapted with infrastructure by the Local National Park Administration, for easy access to major scenic spots without interfering with the natural environment.
The town offers a variety of services designed to optimize the mountain activities of this destination, as tour operators , agencies , experienced mountain guides, organized excursions, camping equipment rental & retail , clothing and others necessary items , while preserving the balance of the environment, thus making el Chalten a unique destination.
For those seeking tranquility and confort, El Chalten also offers many options of accommodation and catering facilities that enhance the stay and travel experience with stories and memories of climbers and pioneer ranchers that forged our Patagonian identity.
We recommend a stay of 3 to 4 days, so you can get to visit different attractions of the destination and its surroundings.
In addition to walking the paths of the National Park and surrounding mountains, you can hire other organized excursions from the village, including various adventure tourism activities.
